Beatrice's Omon Up Against Tough Rookie Camp In Buffalo
Xavier Omon, of Beatrice, was a sixth-round selection of the Buffalo Bills. He said he knows he has his work cut out for him, and it started over the weekend at rookie camp.
"It's definitely harder than college, because you're learning so much new stuff," Omon said. "It's starting to come to you. It's like a puzzle -- got to put it together so it's complete."
After amassing 98 touchdowns over four years at Northwest Missouri State -- 38 in his senior year -- Omon is now just fighting for a roster spot on a team full of talented running backs.
"Marshawn Lynch is a great running back. My job is to challenge him as much as I can. I just got to worry about myself, and do as much as I can not to worry about anybody else," Omon said.
As a multi-sport athlete at Beatrice, Omon was a jack of all trades. He may need to dip into his bag of versatility with the Bills, even if it means joining the special teams.
"It doesn't matter -- running down on kickoffs, returning kickoffs -- it doesn't matter. If that's what it takes to make the team, I'm going to do it. This is what I said I wanted to do my whole life. It's happened; I'm here. I figure if I work hard and stay determined and learning the playbook, my athletic ability will take care of everything else," Omon said.
Omon rushed for more than 2,300 yards as a senior at Northwest Missouri State, which is the fourth-highest tally in Division II history.
