Bills add tight end Johnson
The Bills added some depth to the tight end position today by signing free agent Teyo Johnson. Good timing considering I finished my tight end and H-back analysis yesterday.
Johnson has the potential to be a good receiving threat with his phenomenal size at 6-6, 260-pounds. Robert Royal is listed at 6-4, 255 and Michael Gaines is 6-4, 227. The Oakland Raiders originally selected him in the second round of the 2003 draft out of Stanford.
At Stanford, he actually played wide receiver, racking up 79 receptions, 1,032 yards and 15 touchdowns in 22 games. In his rookie season with the Oakland Raiders, he caught 14 balls for 128 yards and a touchdown.
However, in his second NFL season, he only played in eight games, but put up nine receptions, 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Oakland cut him in the preseason of 2005 and Arizona picked him up. He played in six games with the Cardinals before being released.
Since then, Johnson has been in training camp with Miami and Denver, but didn’t make either team.
I don’t think there is much to lose here for the Bills. He’s likely on a one-year deal at a minimum salary. Johnson has a lot to prove after getting cut from so many teams. Perhaps Buffalo can use him to improve the receiving at the position. After all, I don’t see him being worse than Royal, Gaines and company.
The one red flag that comes with all the cuts is that he could be a head case or locker room cancer. Maybe a year away from the game got him ready.
If I’m in the Buffalo front office, this is not the only acquisition at the tight end position. The Bills should look in free agency or the draft for a higher profile and more reliable player.
